Last year, Nintendo announced that a sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie is in the works, with plans to release in 2026.
As shared by @Wario64, the film’s producer NBCUniversal has seemingly revealed the title of the sequel. During their NBCUniversal Upfront showcase, the title “Super Mario World” was reportedly mentioned amongst their slate of upcoming movies. This title is believed to refer to the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel.
An exciting range of films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation and Illumination were presented, including Megan 2.0, Nobody 2, Bad Guys 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Black Phone 2, HIM, The Phoenician Scheme, Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions.
Presumably, the film is named after the SNES game Super Mario World, which introduced Mario’s dinosaur companion Yoshi to the franchise. This make sense since Yoshi was teased heavily in the post-credits scene of the Super Mario Bros. Movie.
At the time of this writing, further details about the new movie have yet to surface. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
