European Consumer Organisation Calls For Joy-Con Drift Investigation After Over 25K Complaints

Joy-Con drift is a problem that has been plaguing many Switch owners ever since the console’s launch, one that Nintendo has been frequently called to address through lawsuits and other investigations.

Now, the European Consumer Organization (BEUC) has stepped in to call for an Europe-wide investigation into Joy-Con drift after receiving complaints from over 25,000 consumers from across the region, including “France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia and Greece”. Furthermore, 88% of these complaints reported their Joy-Cons malfunctioning within their first two years of use.

The organization has submitted these complaints to the European Commission and other consumer protection bodies in Europe according to rules relating to “”premature obsolescence and misleading omissions of key consumer information on the basis of the EU’s Unfair Commercial Practices Directive”. To rectify this, the BEUC has called for Nintendo to offer free repairs for all faulty Joy-Cons, and take steps to better inform consumers about the potential for drift.

BEUC boss Monique Goyens also released the following statement regarding the issue:

“Consumers assume the products they buy to last an appropriate amount of time according to justified expectations, not to have to pay for expensive replacements due to a technical defect. Nintendo must now come up with proper solutions for the thousands of consumers affected by this problem.”
