External Translators Say Nintendo Does Not Properly Credit Them In Games

Nintendo has been called out for failing to credit the external translators that worked on their games.

The report was published by Game Developer, who spoke to several “anonymous sources” who were contracted as external translators to work on Nintendo’s titles. According to these external translators, Nintendo has a policy of not including the names of translators in the credits if they work for outside agencies. This policy extends to the translators not being able to include their work for Nintendo on their CVs, which some claim has negatively impacted their job prospects.

“Professionally, it’s hard to tell how much this has impacted me. It’s entirely possible that more translation agencies would have approached me if my name was out there in all these big blockbuster Nintendo games, but who knows?”

“It is Nintendo’s policy to not list the name of translators from external agencies in their game credits, which also forbids us from listing those titles on our CVs,”

Some sources also claim that Nintendo makes external translators sign a 10-year NDA preventing them from promoting or discussing their work, which further hinders their ability to promote themselves and further their careers as translators.

At the time of this writing, Nintendo has yet to respond to these accusations. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
