Famitsu has published another installment of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate creator Masahiro Sakurai’s column for the magazine, and some translations have begun surfacing online.
In the column, Sakurai seemingly confirms that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be “finalized” after all of its DLC fighters are released, and “definitively” says that there are only two fighters remaining, both of which will be released this year.
Sakurai also shares a bit of his thoughts about the future after wrapping up Smash Ultimate, including his eventual retirement from game development, although he clarifies that he will not be stopping game development or his Famitsu column just yet.
You can read a summary of the key points below, as translated by @KodyNOKOLO and @Sephazon:
- Sakurai wrote this installment of the column right after Golden Week, and was reluctant to part with his time off during the holidays.
- During Golden Week, he stopped working long enough to start thinking about the future.
- According to the translation ” He doesn’t want to keep working forever after he’s older” and that “honestly if he had a little more free time he thinks his days would be more fun”, he also “likes the idea of an early retirement”.
- Sakurai believes the question of how long work will continue is apparent. While he’s getting older, the amount of time new game developers can work is relatively long.
- He continues by pointing out how young game developers are, and how talented people in entertainment are.
- Sakurai says that while the experiences people create can last forever, personal work will always come to an end someday.
- As long as he can continue to create new experiences, he will. Even if he’s busy, he believes it’s best to push on and do as much as you can. He does, however, express doubt whether this feeling is best suited for the times.
- Sakurai also takes the opportunity to announce that when all Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC is released, the game will be finalized, and he believes this will be quite soon.
- Sakurai says that while we wait, he can say definitively there are only two fighters remaining. They will both be released this year.
- Sakurai ends by saying that he will not be quitting game-related work after development wraps up, and will continue to work hard to the finish.
- Sakurai adds an addition note at the bottom of the column, saying that he has been writing columns for Famitsu for 18 years. It’s been a long series for a game developer to write, but he’ll continue for just a little longer.
