Fanmade Mario Royale Reborn As DMCA Royale After Apparent Cease And Desist

Mere days after we initially reported on it, the fan-made Mario Royale has been completely revamped as “DMCA Royale” due to an apparent cease and desist from Nintendo.

In case you missed it, Mario Royale was a Mario fangame which incorporated the popular Battle Royale trend into its gameplay. Players raced 75 other Marios to complete the same level, all on the same screen, and even with the ability to interact with each other to an extent.

However, it all came to an end after the fangame’s creator InfernoPlus was apparently served a DMCA by Nintendo’s lawyers, confirmed on Mario Royale‘s original Youtube video. In response, InfernoPlus swiftly began the process of stripping Mario Royale of all of its Mario references, with the story unfolding in the series of Tweets shown below:

As you can see, Mario Royale is now known as DMCA Royale as of June 23 2019. It features a new not-Mario tileset along with a new not-Mario hero, which was apparently enough for Nintendo to drop the claim. While removing the Mario branding does sadly make the project lose some of its appeal, at least fans can still continue enjoying the game in it current state, rather than it disappearing for good.
