Back in 2021, internal court documents from Epic Games’ legal battle with Apple seemingly revealed that a crossover between Fortnite and Metroid was being planned by the developer, but has ultimately never happened in the years following.
Appearing on Stephen Totilo’s Game File, former Epic Games chief creative officer Donald Mustard confirmed that were indeed in discussion to have Metroid‘s Samus Aran appear in Fortnite as a collaboration skin. Unfortunately however, talks were stalled because Nintendo wanted their characters to only appear in the Switch version of the game, which Mustard and Epic felt was “counter to the spirit of Fortnite”, which was to ensure that every player had the same experience across platforms.
“[Nintendo] got really hung up on their characters showing up on platforms that weren’t their platforms. They would be thrilled to have Nintendo characters in Fortnite, but just only if it’s on their platform.”
“For me and for all of Epic we’re like, that is an absolute must. We want to make sure that Fortnite is the same experience, no matter what screen or device you’re playing on.'”
Mustard’s account is perhaps unsurprising given how notoriously protective Nintendo is of their characters and franchises. In light of this, it seems less likely that a Fortnite crossover with Metroid or any other Nintendo series will happen any time soon, unless Nintendo deigns to relax their stance a little.
