Furukawa: Nintendo Will Continue To Release 2 To 3 Smartphone Apps Annually

In the latest Kyoto News interview with Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, the President briefly touched on Nintendo’s plans for smartphone apps.

When asked about the connectivity between Pokemon GO and Nintendo Switch, Furukawa responded Nintendo does not have any plans to connect all of their smartphone apps with games on consoles.

One goal of making smartphone apps is to increase the fans of a certain IP. The monetization of smartphone apps is different from traditional console games. Nintendo makes a profit off every Switch game sold, whereas they only make a profit off micro transactions in smartphone apps.

The gameplay of smartphone apps developed by Nintendo do not mix well with the types of games developed for Switch, so it is not possible or practical to link every app to every game.

Last but not least, Furukawa says Nintendo is committed to release “two to three” smartphone apps within the year. No names were mentioned.
