Furukawa Wants Nintendo To Make Smartphone Apps That Are “Huge Hits”

Earlier today, the Nikkan published an interview with Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, revealing that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had sold 5 million copies worldwide in its first week.

In addition to this, Furukawa briefly commented on other business matters. First, he revealed Nintendo is selling the Nintendo Switch in around 60 countries and has smartphone apps such as Super Mario Run offered in around 150 countries.

Furukawa reiterated that he still wants to make the smartphone business a “pillar” of Nintendo, even if it takes “a lot of time”. A pillar refers to a core business of Nintendo in terms of large amount of earnings, such as the Nintendo Switch (home console) business and Nintendo 3DS (handheld) business.

Furukawa says Nintendo is developing “multiple applications” for smartphones in the hopes they will turn into “huge hits” in the market. He didn’t elaborate what those applications are.

Sadly, Furukawa didn’t mention a single word on Mario Kart Tour, the first Mario Kart smartphone game. It is due for release before the end of March 2019.
