During Game Informer’s interview with Game Freak developers Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori, the duo were asked what Pokemon spin-off game they would like to create in the future.
Masuda said he would like to create a Rhydon Racing spin-off game. “It’s kind of an Easter Egg from X and Y, but Rhydon Racing was a thing in that world. There might be a message in there that I really want to create Rhydon racing,” Masuda said.
Ohmori, on the other hand, would like to see a 2D side-scrolling action Pokemon spin-off game. It’d be interesting to see how that would work!
As for their current favorite spin-offs, Masuda says it’s definitely Pokemon GO. He added the general sentiment of the Pokemon franchise now is following the same trend after Pokemon Gold and Silver were released. “Pokémon Go is experiencing something similar where people are saying, ‘Eh, it’s done. The fad’s over,’ but it was way worse than that after Gold and Silver had settled down and we were working on the next game,” he said.
Pokemon Snap is Ohmori’s favorite, and he really got into it back in the day. “The most fun part for me – this may have been a Japan-only thing – but you could take your game to a convenience store and print out the photos you took and could use them like stickers and put them on things. I just had a lot of fun being able to take the photos in the game and print them out as things that I could use,” Ohmori says.
