The legendary Street Fighter games make their way onto the Nintendo Switch. Last year, we saw Capcom release “Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers” to much success. That release featured modern graphics and online mode. This release is a little bit different. Anniversary Collection commemorates 30 years of Street Fighter. It features 12 classic games including: Street Fighter, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors’ Dream, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter III: New Generation, Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact- Giant Attack and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike- Fight for the Future. Every game included in the collection are available to play in offline mode, all in their original arcade styles. The collection is a healthy dose of nostalgia, perfectly packaged in a sleek, and seamless release. Street Fighter features your favorite classic characters like: Ryu, Ken, Blanka, Chun-Li, Cammie and much more!
As any kid in the 90’s knows, Street Fighter was the go-to fighting game. How does it hold after 30 years? Let’s dive in!
Gameplay
After 30 years, Street Fighter remains one of the best and most competitive fighters of all time. This collections offers plenty of the different modes and methods to battle. In offline mode, you can choose between 12 different titles to play in arcade mode, versus mode, or just in training to hone your skills. There is also local play mode, where you can battle your friends in the Nintendo Switch’s unique tabletop mode. This mode allows you to choose between four different titles. Finally, you can play these classic titles with anyone in the world in Online mode, between four classic titles. Create a lobby for you friends, or you can just challenge fellow fighters between ranked and casual matches. The package contains all of the classic moves and combos, and feels very comfortable with the Switch’s controls. Do you have what it takes to be the World Warrior?
Graphics and Sound
While this collections retains all of their original graphical quality, this package looks great. The games play seemlessly. On the side of the screen features original artwork, and it really enhances the value of the game. The music has also aged extremely well. I was pleasantly please with the sound quality of the music. It really puts you in the mood and sets the tone of the game.
Entertainment
The game includes the aforementioned titles and modes. This alone is the worth the value of the collection. Capcom really does preserve it’s classics very well. Also, the Nintendo Switch is flexible enough to really add value to the different ways to play. The hardware really propels this title to be something very special. This collection includes a Museum as well. The museum includes a really well history tab; the history tab not only displays a gallery and game info, but also has a music section. This will particularly be attractive to long time fans of the games. The original artwork shown in the gallery section is very attractive. The history tab shows off different factoids throughtout the series life, such as a picture of the 8-bit version of Street Fighter, which was never released. The history section is really worthwhile to browse through. The characters tab is also really fun. While a lot of the Street Fighter characters are iconic, practicularly those featured in Street Fighter II, it’s fun to revisit some of the lesser known characters. The collections provides background info, stats and pictures. You can also listen and revisit the music of the game. Finally, the collection includes a section about the making of Street Fighter, and original sketch designs of the arcade games.
Final Thoughts
Overall this is a great collection of classic arcade games. Capcom did a wonderful job at preserving the legacy of Street Fighter, as well as introducing a whole new generation to the classic fighter! Street Fighter remains one of, if not the best fighting games ever.
