Like other titles in the MOBA genre, not every Pokemon in Pokemon Unite will be immediately playable on launch, and will require players to accumulate in-game currency in order to purchase Unite Licenses to access their favorites permanently.
That said, there are currently a few Pokemon that will not necessarily require currency to unlock, and can be obtained for free by meeting certain conditions. This includes a selection of starter Pokemon which the player can choose from, as well as Pokemon that can be obtained from login-bonuses. There will also be a small selection of free-to-use Pokemon that will rotate from time to time.
You can check out a list of the Pokemon that can currently be unlocked for free in Pokemon Unite below:
Starter Pokemon (1 out of the following):
- Pikachu
- Charizard
- Eldegoss
- Snorlax
- Talonflame

The remaining Pokemon can currently be unlocked by purchasing Unite Licenses from the shop. Each Pokemon costs between 6,000 ~ 10,000 Aeos coins which can be earned via gameplay, or between 345 ~ 460 Aeos gems which are the game’s premium currency.
Pokemon Unite is now available for free on Switch, and launches on mobile sometime in September.
