Guide: Tips To Complete Pokemon Scarlet/Violet’s 7-Star Greninja Raid

Over the course of this weekend, Pokemon Scarlet And Violet players will be challenging their third 7 Star Tera Raid, which features a Poison Tera Type Greninja.

Aside from being the only way to obtain Greninja in the game currently, the 7 Star Tera Raid gives out a great deal of useful rewards such as Vitamins, Rare Candies, and Ability Patches. This makes being able to complete the raid consistently extremely useful. Below you will find some quick tips and tricks for beating this Raid Battle, as discovered and shared by many members of the Pokemon community.

How To Unlock 7-Star Raids

In order to even participate in this raid battle, players will need to progress far enough in the game to qualify for 7-Star raids. This essentially means meeting the following requirements:

  • Have completed the story and seen the end credits
  • Have completed all Gym Rematches and the Academy Ace Tournament
  • Have completed 10 or more raids rated 4* and above.

Once you have completed these steps, the 7-Star Raid will appear both in your overworld as well as on the Tera Raid board.

Greninja’s Ability and Moves

  • The Tera Raid Greninja  has a Poison Tera-Type, meaning that it does more damage with its Poison moves in addition to its Water and Dark moves.
  • As a Poison Tera-Type, it is weak to Psychic and Ground type attacks.
  • Greninja’s Ability is Protean, which has no effect in Tera Raid Battles
  • Greninja will always open the raid by using Double Team, to boost its Evasion, followed by Toxic Spikes, which poison the player’s Pokemon when they return to battle after fainting.
  • Greninja’s notable moves include the following:
    • Gunk Shot ~ A powerful Poison-Type Physical attack which does massive damage with a chance to poison.
    • Hydro Pump ~ A powerful Water-Type Special Attack
    • Night Slash ~ A powerful Dark-Type Physical Attack
    • Ice Beam ~ A powerful Ice-Type Special Attack
    • Double Team ~ Status move that boosts its evasion, making Greninja harder to hit.
  • After a short period of time, Greninja will clear all buffs and nullify all abilities for one turn, potentially ruining certain setups like Slowbro’s.
  • When Greninja reaches half-health or when the timer reaches 3/4, it will put up a Tera Raid shield which makes it more resistant to attacks from non-Terastalized Pokemon.

General Recommendations

  • Avoid using Pokemon with a weakness to Poison, Water, Dark, or Ice moves. Fainting in battle reduces the timer, and if it reaches zero before Greninja is defeated, everyone will fail the raid battle.
  • Avoid using Fairy Type Pokemon even if they were useful in a previous Raid. Azumarill and Sylveon are quite frail, and a single hit from Greninja’s Gunk Shot will likely cause them to faint.
  • Use Level 100 Pokemon to maximize your chance of successfully completing the raid.
  • Use Vitamins to maximize your Pokemon’s key stats to increase your chance of successfully completing the Raid.
  • Use Cheers when necessary
    • Go For It! ~ Boosts Attacking stats.
    • Heal Up! ~ Heals HP and cures Status conditions. This is of particular importance as Greninja can inflict both Poison and Freeze status, which can crippled your Pokemon.
  • Use moves which reduce Greninja’s stats
    • Reduce Def or Sp.Def to take it down faster.
    • Reduce Atk to prevent it from fainting your Pokemon.
  • Use Pokemon with a Psychic or Ground Tera-Type to take down its Tera Shield.
