Over the next two weeks, Pokemon Scarlet And Violet players will be challenging a 7 Star Tera Raid which features the Mightiest Mewtwo.
At the time of this writing, the Mightiest Mewtwo raid is the toughest Tera Raid challenge yet, boasting maxed out Effort Values, a significant boost to its HP, and more. Completing this difficult raid will reward players with the rare opportunity to capture the Legendary Mewtwo for themselves, and is the only way to obtain it in Pokemon Scarlet And Violet without the use of Pokemon HOME. Below you will find some quick tips and tricks for beating this Raid Battle, as discovered and shared by many members of the Pokemon community.
How To Unlock 7-Star Raids
In order to even participate in this raid battle, players will need to progress far enough in the game to qualify for 7-Star raids. This essentially means meeting the following requirements:
- Have completed the story and seen the end credits
- Have completed all Gym Rematches and the Academy Ace Tournament
- Have completed 10 or more raids rated 4* and above.
Once you have completed these steps, the 7-Star Raid will appear both in your overworld as well as on the Tera Raid board.
Mewtwo’s Ability and Moves
- The Tera Raid Mewtwo has a Psychic Tera-Type, meaning that it does more damage with its Psychic-Type moves.
- As a Psychic Tera-Type, it is weak to Bug and Dark type attacks.
- Mewtwo’s Ability is Unnerve, which prevents opposing Pokemon from eating berries.
- Mewtwo’s notable moves include the following:
- Psystrike ~ Mewtwo’s signature move, a powerful Psychic-Type Special Attack that deals damage based on the opponent’s Defense stat as opposed to it’s Sp. Defense stat.
- Aura Sphere ~Powerful Fighting-Type Special Attack that never misses.
- Ice Beam~ Powerful Ice-Type Special Attack that has a chance to freeze the opponent.
- Calm Mind ~ Status move that boosts Mewtwo’s Sp. Attack and Sp. Defense stats.
- Rest ~ Status move that fully recovers Mewtwo’s HP, but puts it to sleep.
- Mewtwo’s Battle Behaviour
- At the stat of the battle, Mewtwo will use Calm Mind to boost it’s Sp. Attack and Sp. Defense stats, as well as put up it’s Tera Shield.
- Over the course of the battle, Mewtwo will act similar to other Tera Raid bosses, engaging in the following actions:
- Boosting its stats with Calm Mind
- Clearing debuffs from itself
- Clearing buffs from you and your teammates, as well as temporarily disabling abilities for one turn.
- Once the Tera Shield is broken, Mewtwo will use Rest, fully recovering it’s HP. After which, it will use it’s held item Chesto Berry to wake itself up from sleep.
- Players must reduce Mewtwo’s HP to zero in order to complete the raid and get a chance to capture it.
General Recommendations
- Avoid using Pokemon with a weakness to Psychic, Fighting, and Ice moves. Fainting in battle reduces the timer, and if it reaches zero before the raid boss is defeated, everyone will fail the raid battle.
- Use the free Mew that can be obtained with the Mystery Gift code GETY0URMEW. When used in a Mewtwo Tera Raid, Mew will receive a boost to it’s HP and stats, which is highly useful as Mewtwo hits very hard with it’s attacks and has very potent defenses due to its Tera Shield and maxed out EVs.
- The Mew code is available until the end of the Mewtwo Raid, so there is ample time to obtain it and get it trained up to beat it.
- Use a Level 100 Mew to maximize your chance of successfully completing the raid.
- Use Vitamins to maximize your Mew’s key stats to increase your chance of successfully completing the Raid.
- Use Cheers when necessary
- Go For It! ~ Boosts Attacking stats.
- Hang Tough! ~ Boosts Defensive stats.
- Heal Up! ~ Heals HP and cures Status conditions.
- Use moves which reduce Mewtwo’s stats
- Reduce Def or Sp.Def to take it down faster.
- Reduce Sp.Atk to prevent it from fainting your Pokemon.
Recommended Pokemon
- For an easy time in this raid, it is recommended to find a party with four Mews, one focusing on support, while the rest focus on attacking.
- Pokemon with a similar moveset to the Support Mew such as Grimmsnarl could also do well, but they may have a tough time surviving without the special boosts given to Mews that participate in this raid.
- Mew is being distributed to everyone for free via Mystery Gift code, so there should be plenty of players using it, even when playing with random teammates.
Mew (Attacker)
- Psychic typing makes it resistant or neutral to all of Mewtwo’s moves.
- Recommended Tera-Type: Bug
- Recommended Stat Spread
- Adamant Nature to raise Atk
- Max out Atk with Protein
- Max out HP with HPUp
- Recommended Moves:
- Leech Life ~ Powerful Bug-Type Physical attack that recovers Mew’s HP.
- Swords Dance ~ Status move that sharply raises Attack.
- Struggle Bug ~ Bug-Type Special attack that reduces Mewtwo’s Sp.Attack stat.
- Misty Terrain ~ Status move that puts down Misty Terrain, which blocks all status ailments for Mewtwo, Mew, and your teammates.
- Recommended Items:
- Metronome ~ Boosts the power of moves that are used twice or more in a row.
- Strategy (Attacker)
- Start by using Struggle Bug to reduce Mewtwo’s Sp.Attack stat while charging your Tera Orb.
- After your Tera Orb is charged, use Swords Dance three times to maximise your Attack stat.
- It is recommended that you do not Terastalize yet, as you will lose your resistance to Mewtwo’s Psystrike upon changing to a Bug Tera Type.
- After you have sufficiently boosted your stats, Terastalize into a Bug-Type and start using Leech Life. If done correctly, you will be able to take a decent chunk off Mewtwo’s Tera Shield health each time, increasing in power every turn due to the Metronome Held Item.
- Only stop using Leech Life in the event of the following:
- Mewtwo clears your buffs: In this case, build up your Attack stat with Swords Dance again before switching back to Leech Life.
- Mewtwo removes all debuffs from itself: In this case, start using Struggle Bug again a few times before switching back to Leech Life.
- Once Mewtwo is close to half-HP, it is recommended to use Misty Terrain if none of your teammates have done so. This will block Mewtwo from using Rest, preventing it from recovering it’s HP and potentially prolonging the Raid.
- From this point on, continue with the previous strategy until Mewtwo’s HP reaches zero.
Mew (Support)
- Psychic typing makes it resistant or neutral to all of Mewtwo’s moves.
- Recommended Tera-Type: Bug
- Recommended Stat Spread
- Modest Nature to raise Sp. Atk
- Max out Sp.Atk with Calcium
- Max out HP with HPUp
- Recommended Moves:
- Struggle Bug ~ Bug-Type Special attack that reduces Mewtwo’s Sp.Attack stat.
- Misty Terrain ~ Status move that puts down Misty Terrain, which blocks all status ailments for Mewtwo, Mew, and your teammates.
- Light Screen ~ Status move that reduces the damage done by Special Attacks. All of Mewtwo’s moves are Special Attacks, so this is the only screen move required.
- Life Dew ~ Status move that slightly recovers HP for all teammates.
- Recommended Items:
- Light Clay ~ Increases the duration of screen moves from 5 turns to 8 turns.
- Strategy (Support)
- Start by using Light Screen to protect you and your teammates from Mewtwo’s attacks.
- Continuously use Struggle Bug to reduce Mewtwo’s Sp.Attack stat while charging your Tera Orb.
- When your teammates’ HP gets low, use Life Dew to help them recover some health.
- While not necessary, it may be helpful to Terastalize into a Bug-type so your Struggle Bug attacks also help whittle down Mewtwo’s Tera Shield.
- After 8 turns, use Light Screen again as it would have worn off by this point.
- Check the status of Light Screen by pressing Y before choosing your attacks, and then selecting your own Pokemon.
