On this day 30 years ago, the Nintendo Entertainment System game that took the world by storm, Super Mario Bros. 3, was released in Japan.
Super Mario Bros. 3 was the third 2D Mario game released in Japan and the west. It was one of the most highly anticipated games ever, and up till this very day, many video game fans still believe that the game is one of the best Mario games ever created, or even the best video game in history.
Super Mario Bros. 3 introduced the Super Leaf, giving Mario the ability to fly for the very first time, as well as other power ups including the Hammer Suit and Tanooki Suit. It was also the first Mario game to feature a world map, the Koopalings, and airship stages.
Although it’s been 30 years since the release of Super Mario Bros. 3, the game has reappeared many times in recent years, from the Virtual Console service on Wii and Nintendo 3DS, to the all new Nintendo Switch Online: Nintendo Entertainment System service.
Perhaps it’s time to play some Super Mario Bros. 3 to commemorate this very special day.
