Here’s Some Interesting Insights From Reggie Fils-Aimé’s New Book “Disrupting The Game”

Earlier this week, Reggie Fils-Aimé released his book “Disrupting the Game: From the Bronx to the Top of Nintendo”, which chronicles his career in the gaming industry, including his time at Nintendo.

As you might expect, the book contains many interesting stories and behind the scenes details about Fils-Aimé himself as well as his work at Nintendo. This includes how Reggie got his start at the company, the origins of his iconic intro speech, as well as a time where he clashed with Shigeru Miyamoto over bundling Wii Sports with the Wii console.

You can check out a video from Gamexplain covering these stories below:

  • A Nintendo recruiter called Reggie back in 2003 to see if he wanted to be the next head of sales and marketing for Nintendo of America
    • Reggie almost didn’t get the job because he requested to talk to Satoru Iwata, which was highly unusual
  • Reggie’s son beat Ganon in Zelda: A Link to the Past on Reggie’s save file without Reggie knowing it
  • Reggie’s ‘My name is Reggie, I’m about kicking ass, I’m about taking names, and we’re about making games.’ originally said, ‘I’m about making games,’ but the line wasn’t sitting right during rehearsals, so it was changed to reflect Nintendo as a whole
    • Iwata approved Reggie’s intro message, including the cursing
  • Reggie suggested Wii Sports should be included with the Wii to showcase the platform
    • Miyamoto was not happy about this and suggested Wii Play might be a better fit for pack-in, but Reggie said it wouldn’t have the same lasting impact, but it could be bundled with a Wii Remote instead
  • Reggie suggested adding sudoku to Brain Age, and Dr. Kawashima loved the idea
  • Reggie doesn’t mention Mother 3 in his book at all
  • Reggie thought he was going to be fired when Iwata was flying out to talk to him after an E3 presentation, but instead, Iwata offered him a promotion
  • Reggie came up with the ‘Wii would like to play’ ad campaign
  • Reggie said he would have preferred if the Game Boy Micro wasn’t launched in the U.S., or had development halted all together
