Internal GameFreak Documentary About Pokemon Diamond/Pearl Surfaces Online, Features Many Early And Scrapped Pokemon Designs

An interesting piece of Pokemon history has surfaced online about the 4th Generation Pokemon games Pokemon Diamond And Pearl.

The leak in question is of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl: Behind the Scenes DVD — MAKE ALL, an internal documentary shot by developer GameFreak, which chronicled the game’s 2-year development process. The company had a viewing of this documentary on Pokemon Day 2007, after which DVD copies were allegedly distributed to viewers. 20 years later, Pokemon collector Neos (neos_tcg) managed to purchase a copy of the DVD on an auction site, and worked with a team of archivists led by Lewtwo to dump and preserve the contents.

The full documentary can be viewed via the Internet Archive, as well as on Youtube. The documentary details various aspects of the game’s development, including the initial concepts, setting, and features. Most interesting however is a segment covering the design process for the new Pokemon featured in the game, featuring hundreds of never before seen Pokemon designs that never made it to the final game. This includes older designs for Pokemon from Diamond/Pearl’s Sinnoh region such as the Starter Pokemon, as well as scrapped concepts like an evolution for Delibird, a Water-Type starter concept resembling a poodle, and many more.
