Just like how quickly the SNES Classic Edition sold out in North America and Europe, things weren’t any better in Japan.
Yodobashi and Nojima, which opened pre-orders for the system at 9am Japan Time, were completely out of stock in less than 10 minutes. There were even difficulties in accessing Nojima due to the high number of users trying to pre-order the Super Famicom Classic Mini.
Rakuten Books and Yamada Denki started taking pre-orders at around 10am and 11am Japan Time respectively. Both sold out in a few minutes.
Amazon Japan opened pre-orders for multiple variations of the system (post card set, post card set with AC adapter), and sold out in 11 minutes.
HMV Japan is a very peculiar retailer, as they didn’t open any pre-orders for the system. Instead, they started a raffle to choose lucky winners who will get the chance to buy the system.
As for the usual brick-and-mortar stores, as many as 800 people were seen lining up outside Yodobashi and Bic Camera stores across Japan.
If you haven’t got a Super Famicom Classic Mini or SNES Classic Edition yet, don’t fret – Nintendo will continue to manufacture more systems even through 2018. Hang in there, and don’t give in to scalpers!
