The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry has published a report on the state of the video game industry in different countries and their projections in the next 3 years.
The ministry has painted a grim picture for the console gaming, as they expect the market share for console gaming to shrink in all major markets by 2022. This is because the ministry expects spending for social games (smartphone games) to drastically increase by 2022.
In 2013, console games captured a market share of 31.3%, but that slid to 21.0% in 2017. The ministry expects that figure to decrease to 17.3% by 2022:
Similar projections are expected for the United States – from 55.6% in 2013, to 39.2% in 2017, and finally 34.8% in 2022:
The only market that is exception to this rule is mainland China, as the ministry projects market share for console games to increase from 0.8% in 2017 to 4.9% in 2022:
