The Nintendo amiibo Collection is one that speaks both the legacy and story of each character. In each week’s Know Your amiibo, we delve into the back story, as well as, trivia of one particularly lucky amiibo.
This Week in Know Your amiibo, we’re going to talk more about Link. More specifically the Super Smash Bros. Series Link amiibo.
The Super Smash Bros. Link takes its image from the Link Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS, though his appearance is largely modeled after The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess’s Link. Appearing in the first wave of Super Smash Bros. amiibo, as well as, the first wave of amiibo of any kind, Link quickly became the hottest selling amiibo in the North America region.
However, his popularity is not without merits. The amiibo is very intricately designed. From the facial design to the rivets behind his shield, every detail, be it immediately visible or not, has been carefully considered into its production. All the hard work in its craft is, however, is beset by the synonymous “pee-stick” sticking out of the amiibo’s right thigh. Funnily though, the unsightly yellow support was not always present during the development of the amiibo. In early advertising from Nintendo, The Super Smash Bros. Link can be seen with a more cylindrical, clear support stick. The same Link was also floating slightly compared to the final product.
In Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS, Link is a mid-tier heavyweight sword fighter. Though being one of the most popular amiibo figures out there, Link’s popularity in the professional Smash scene remains dismissal. Though considerably buffed from his previous appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it still remained comparatively mediocre on the current roster.
In Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS, the Link amiibo can be used to unlock a trainable Link CPU opponent. Players can train-up and save their Link CPU character back into their Link amiibo and bring it anywhere they wish. There are even whole amiibo tournaments in Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS created due to the amiibo’s ability to be trained and saved.
The Link amiibo is also compatible with a whole range of other games, most notably the recently released “The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild” for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U. Scanning the amiibo in Breath of the Wild, will allow you to summon Epona, Link’s noble steed.
Other notable uses for Link include unlocking the Spinner in Hyrule Warriors, bring in W.Link villager in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, giving Kirby the Sword Cut ability in Kirby: Planet Robo and a puzzle of Link riding Epona in Picross 3D: Round 2. Also, scanning Link in a variety of other games will unlock a whole slew of relevant costumes and skins.
In all honesty, the Link amiibo is really well made. For its suggested retail price, one can hardly ask for anything better. Along with its growing functions as an amiibo and market value, the time-tested character of Link deserves a spot in anyone’s amiibo collection. It is just such a shame it had to come with a pee-stick.
