Earlier this year, we reported on the woes of Capcom – which was hit by a massive hack that likely leaked many of its future development plans to the public. Well, it looks like they’re not quite alone in their troubles, either.

Koei Tecmo Europe has reportedly been hit by a cyber attack as well, leading to a data breach of forum users’ account names, encrypted passwords, and email addresses. While this wasn’t as significant as the attack on Capcom, Koei Tecmo quickly shut down down its US (https://www.koeitecmoamerica.com/) and European websites (koeitecmoeurope.com) as a precaution. At the time of writing, visiting both websites currently brings up the following message:

“Due to the possibility of an external cyberattack on this website, it is temporarily closed as we investigate the issue.”

This was later confirmed by Koei Tecmo in a press statement:

“Within the website operated by KTE, the “Forum” page and the registered user information (approximately 65,000 entries) has been determined to the data that may have been breached. The user data that may have been leaked through hacking is perceived to be the (optional) account names and related password (encrypted) and/or registered e-mail address…”

Currently, Koei Tecmo is handling the English localization of titles such as Atelier Ryza 2 and more. We’ll report back if this situation develops further in the future.
