MariCar’s Operator Has Officially Been Ordered To Pay Nintendo 50 Million Yen In Damages, Following Lawsuit

Last year, the ongoing feud between Nintendo and MARI Mobility (which operated a road karting business resembling Mario Kart) capped off with Nintendo emerging victorious. MARI Mobility was originally to pay Nintendo around 10 million yen (around $96k) in damages, but it looks like its penalty has now increased five-fold!

As of this weekend, the Japanese Supreme Court has finally ruled that MARI Mobility will now have to pay Nintendo 50 million yen (around $483k) in damages, following an appeal from Nintendo. The ruling finally caps off a long legal battle between both companies, which first started in 2017.

If you can read Japanese, here is the official statement from Nintendo on the court ruling.

According to recent reports, MARI Mobility has also been faring somewhat worse in Japan as well – largely due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic cutting down tourist numbers. Meanwhile, Nintendo is now gearing up for the debut of its own AR-enhanced Mario Kart ride at Super Nintendo World Japan in February 2021.

We’ll report back if this situation develops further in the future. Stay tuned.
