We have some tragic news to report for anyone who was a fan of the Mario & Luigi Series of RPGs.
Alphadream, the core developer behind the Mario & Luigi Series has recently filed for bankruptcy in Japan. From its humble beginnings back in January 2000, Alphadream is fondly remembered for their work with Nintendo creating classics such as Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Partners in Time, Bowser’s Inside Story and more.
According to reports, their closure comes as a result of “sluggish revenues, strict management, heavy development costs and growing debt” in recent years. In seems that despite their efforts with recent revivals such as Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions, and Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey, they were unable to recover and have been forced to close up shop.
Only time will tell what this will mean for the Mario & Luigi series moving forward, should Nintendo decide to continue it at all without Alphadream. For now, we wish all of Alphadream’s developers the best of luck with their future endeavors, as their time as Alphadream comes to an end.
