Before the release of Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, many Pokemon fans speculated the next title in the series would be called Pokemon Gray, similar to how Pokemon Yellow came after Pokemon Red and Blue, and Pokemon Emerald after Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire.
It’s been a couple of years since Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 was released, and Junichi Masuda, the director and composer of the core Pokemon RPGs, finally reveals the reason why they didn’t make a game called “Pokemon Gray”.
Here’s his explanation via an AMA with Game Informer’s Kyle Hilliard:
Somewhat related – they did talk about why Pokémon Grey wasn’t a thing after Black and White. Masuda said thematically, the game is about the opposition of good and evil, black and white, yin and yang, etc., and to have a Pokémon Grey would have been in opposition of that theme.
It’s also interesting to note Kyle answered this question when someone asked why there was no “Pokemon Z”, so it seems Game Freak felt “Pokemon Z” didn’t fit the “Pokemon X/Y” theme for various reasons.
