Despite the recent opening of the Mario themed Super Nintendo World and the upcoming animated movie, Nintendo has been largely silent about a brand new mainline game in the Super Mario Bros. series.
In an interview with Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, IGN managed to sneak in a question about a potential new Super Mario Bros. game to release alongside the theme park and movie. In response, Miyamoto said that Nintendo is “always working” on Mario, and that they would share more info when the time is right.
Miyamoto: “We’re always working on Mario, so when we get to a time where we can share information, we’ll certainly do so.”
As of 2023, it has been 6 years since the last brand new mainline game in the Mario series, which was 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey. Since then, the plumber has only starred in spin-offs, re-releases, and remasters, with his latest Nintendo developed outing being 2021’s Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. Given that Mario is Nintendo’s flagship character, it seems like we are well overdue for a brand new Mario game to be announced soon. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
