A lot of trial and errors went on while trying to bringing Nintendo’s #1 mascot onto mobile devices, the game was, after all, Mario’s first foray into the smartphone market.
At CEDEC 2018, Mario’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto shed more light on the development process of Super Mario Run. Miyamoto said that the team began development with the idea that the game should be accessible to as many people as possible, therefore breaking down the platformer into just jumping and moving. However, Miyamoto, being the veteran gamer, requested the game to be a little harder. This caused many players to complain that the game was too hard, leading to the creation of Remix 10 mode.
This changed Miyamoto’s perspective on smartphone gamers and thought that they should have made Super Mario Run more like Remix 10 mode from the start.
Another game that reinforced Miyamoto’s perspective that smartphone games should be simple was Pokemon Go. The game’s simple gameplay mechanic did not sit well with Miyamoto, who after all was a console game maker. However, after seeing the success of Pokemon Go, Miyamoto saw the value of simplicity in games.
