Nintendo Co., Ltd. have applied for several new “Game Controller” patents in Japan.
These five patents are all related to the Pokeball Plus controller, which is a Pokeball-shaped peripheral that can be used with Pokemon Let’s GO Pikachu/Eevee as well as Pokemon Sword And Shield. The patents are described as having the following goals:
- Properly arrange components in a spherical controller
- Enable various operations using a game controller
- Properly arrange components in a spherical controller
- Improve the degree of freedom for a structure for light emission in a game controller
- Provide a game controller in which components are properly arranged in a substantially spherical game controller.

Nintendo filing for these patents seem to imply that they have plans to make more use of the Pokeball Plus in the future, although whether this is in preparation for future mainline titles or something else is anyone’s guess.
