Nintendo is a very big company with many development teams working a whole variety of games. However, what do the development teams think of each other’s work?
In an IGN interview, Nintendo’s Zelda team and Mario team commented on each other’s latest work, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey more specifically.
Right off the bat Breath of the Wild’s Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi praised the game’s 3D and 2D game style. He even continued saying that it was something that only fit in the Mario World
“I think for me, the parts where you’re able to go from 3D into 2D and go into the wall and it becomes the old school style,” Fujibayashi told IGN about Mario. “I especially liked where it looks like there’s nowhere to go, but then the walls curve around. It was super unique. It actually reminded me a bit of Zelda.”
“That’s the kind of thing that we wouldn’t be able to do in a game like Breath of the Wild,” he continued. “It’s something that only fits in the wackier Mario world. So I thought that was really cool.”
Breath of the Wild’s Produce Eiji Aonuma even added:
“Mario can put so many ideas in. I’m kind of jealous of it,” Aonuma added jokingly.
What about Mario team? What do they think of Breath of the Wild? Super Mario Odyssey’s producer Yoshiaki Koizumi had good things to say.
“I think my favorite part of the game was when I finally climbed the highest mountain in the land,” Koizumi told IGN. “Having worked on Zelda games myself, I always wanted to create climbable environments, but I had to promise not to.”
“But really, being on top of that mountain, just the place itself was very impressive,” he said. “I feel drawn to the mountains. It was really nice.”
So that is what each of the teams thinks of each other’s work. Both of them are impressive games in their own right and everyone who owns a Switch should definitely try them out.
