Nintendo has filed a new patent related to enhancing mini-maps in their games.
As shared by @stephentotilo on Twitter, the enhanced mini-map appears mainly be focused on the Splatoon series, and seems to be a system that allows players to better understand their position on the map, the position of important items, as well as locations of interest, utilizing more dynamic and responsive camera movement. The actual patent itself is much more detailed, and there is likely a lot more to this system than can be explained here, so you can check it out for yourself here for the full details.
