Nintendo has started taking legal action to find one of the hackers involved in the infamous GameFreak “Teraleak“.
The leak occurred late last year, and saw over a Terabyte of confidential materials leaked from the Pokemon developer. This included past plans and concept art for previous titles in the series, as well as early betas for the upcoming Pokemon Legends Z-A and Generation 10 Pokemon games. Amidst this, one of the hackers emerged as the face of the leak, going by “GameFreakOUT” on Discord.
Fastfoward to today, and Nintendo his filed a subpoena on Discord to uncover the true identity of GameFreakOUT. In the court filing, Nintendo asserts that GameFreakOUT is guilty of sharing content on his Discord server that violates Nintendo’s copyrights, including “copyright-protected artwork, characters, and other materials related to the famous Pokémon franchise, including but not limited to videogames developed in connection with the Pokémon franchise, such as the videogame Pokémon Legends: Arceus”.
This is not the first time Nintendo has enlisted Discord’s help in finding a leaker. Back in 2019, Nintendo was successfully able to catch and sue people who leaked the contents of the Pokemon Sword/Shield guide book before the games officially released. With this in mind, it may be only a matter of time before GameFreakOUT, along with anyone else involved in the hack on GameFreak, are caught and punished.
