Nintendo Says Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Approach To Customization Is Not Just About Gender, But Valuing Different Identities

Earlier this week, the Washington Post published an interview with the developers of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, where they discussed many of the game’s features such as terraforming and character customization.

One interesting topic that came up was how character customization was no longer restricted according to gender, with characters being able to have any hairstyle and wear any clothes regardless of which of the two they picked.

In the interview, director Aya Kyogoku said that this change was “not just about gender”, but also because the team felt that society was “shifting to valuing a lot of people’s different identities.”.

“We basically wanted to create a game where users didn’t really have to think about gender or if they wanted to think about gender, they’re also able to.”
