In the second quarter of the 2018/2019 financial year, digital sales have skyrocketed across the board for Nintendo Switch.
According to Nintendo’s report, digital sales have hit 39.1 billion yen (USD346 million) in the second quarter. That’s a 71.7% increase on a year-on-year basis, which is pretty impressive. Keep in mind digital sales not only consist of digital sales of software – they also include downloadable content, microtransactions, and Nintendo Switch Online.
As paid online subscription Nintendo Switch Online launched in September 2018, it most likely had contributed to the huge 71.7% spike in digital sales for the second financial quarter. But it isn’t the only contributing factor.
In the second financial quarter of 2017/2018, the proportion of digital sales to total dedicated video game software sales (digital + physical sales) was 18.6%. But in the second quarter of 2018/2019, it’s 26.0%. In fact, 26.0% is higher than any of the financial quarters of 2017/2018 (the highest was 24.0% in the fourth financial quarter), indicating that the proportion of digital sales to total sales will only continue to increase in the near future.
