It looks like the Nintendo Switch is making some small waves over in Japan’s close-by neighbor!
According to market analysts Daniel Ahmad, the console has reportedly exceeded 600,000 units sold within South Korea. This figure likely includes the grey market (i.e. import units from Japan and the US), and is apparently growing faster than PS4 sales in the same country!
To some, this figure might not seem all that much at all. However, one has to consider that the mobile and PC gaming markets are much more dominant in South Korea. According to statistics site Newzoo, only 24% of South Korean men and 14% of South Korean women online played console games at least once per month in 2018. In contrast, 59% of South Korean men and 47% of Korean women online played mobile games at least once per month in 2018. Console gaming is usually just a small drop in the market.
That being said, perhaps the Switch is attracting South Koreans with its portable form factor – just like in Japan! We’ll report back whenever we hear more about the console’s performance in the future,
