Bad news for those of you living in the United States – prices of video game consoles and accessories are expected to skyrocket in the next few months.
This week, US President Donald Trump published a plan to implement tariffs of up to 25% on almost all remaining goods that have yet to be tariff-ed from China. The tariffs will greatly affect consumer goods, which include video game consoles, smartphones, and toys.
If a 25% tariff is slapped onto the Nintendo Switch, consumers in the US will have to fork out an extra USD75. The tariffs will not affect Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS video games, as they are manufactured and shipped from Japan. Nintendo’s video game consoles and accessories, on the other hand, are assembled in China, so they will be affected by the tariffs.
A public hearing on the tariffs is expected to take place on June 24, 2019, and if it proceeds as planned, it could be implemented by July 10, 2019.
There is still time for the governments of the United States and People’s Republic of China to negotiate at the G20 summit, but both sides have not planned a meeting at this time.
