Some Nintendo Switch physical collectors have been wondering about the increased number of Game-Key Cards for Nintendo Switch 2 even in markets like Japan where Game Cards are sold more frequently than code-in-a-box (download codes in physical game cases). Now, there may be an explanation for this.
According to YouTube channel SwitchWatch who has spoken to a source with some knowledge about Nintendo Switch 2 Game Cards, unlike Nintendo Switch, Nintendo is offering far fewer storage options for Nintendo Switch 2. For comparison, Nintendo Switch Game Cards come in multiple capacities, while SwitchWatch’s source claims that Nintendo Switch 2 Game Cards come in two types – a very small size or a 64 GB Game Card, with nothing at all in the middle.
This means that from a cost perspective, publishers with games that are 7 GB or larger, it will make more sense to go for a Game-Key Card rather than a Game Card, as they will have to pay a huge cut to Nintendo for a 64 GB Game Card.
It may also explain why the physical versions of Nintendo’s first-party titles are USD10 more than the digital versions, such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, which could be stored on 64 GB Game Cards even though they are 23 GB and 11 GB respectively.
SwitchWatch’s source also claimed in the video that a 64 GB Game Card costs USD16, which is very pricey considering the distribution and production cost.
