Nintendo Takes Down Over 8,000 Emulator Copies Based On Yuzu’s Code

Earlier this year, Nintendo filed a lawsuit against the creators of the Switch emulator Yuzu, successfully getting the emulator taken off the internet and forcing the developers to stop working on the project.

Following up on this victory, Nintendo has now taken down 8535 GitHub repositories containing code from Yuzu, all of which would have had the potential to become a new clone of the original emulator.

As documented on Github’s record of the takedown notice, Nintendo initially filed claims against repositories that could “provide access to the yuzu emulator or code based on the yuzu emulator” and could “illegally circumvent Nintendo’s technological protection measures and run illegal copies of Nintendo Switch games”. This initial takedown caused a ripple effect leading to the takedown of 8535 other repositories that could also be similarly infringing:

“Because the reported network that contained the allegedly infringing content was larger that one hundred repositories, and the submitter alleged that all or most of the forks were infringing to the same extent as the parent repository, GitHub processed the takedown notice against the entire network of 8,535 repositories, including of the parent repository.”

This actions suggest that Nintendo has hardened their stance against Switch emulation in the console’s waning years. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
