Nintendo: There Is No Formula That Decides What Games Get Remakes On Switch
Today we have an interesting question and answer to share with you from Nintendo’s Q&A session for the 6 months ending September 30, 2019.
An investor asked Nintendo whether the company had a formula or plan that decided which games released in the past get remakes on Nintendo Switch. He cited Famicom Detective Club and Pokemon Let’s GO Pikachu/Eevee as examples.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa told the investor that the company doesn’t have a concrete plan that decides which titles get remakes, though he did mentioned three factors – nostalgia, whether they could offer a new experience, and whether the developers want to remake the game.

We do not have a concrete plan that decides which remake titles are released. In over 30 years of our video game business, many customers have played our games, and we are aware that these games have a special place in our customers’ hearts. In my opinion, that is a very important asset to our company. Although nostalgia is a very important factor (in deciding whether to remake a game), another important factor is whether we could offer new gameplay experiences in remakes. Of course, I also feel another important factor is whether the developers feel strongly about remaking the title. One game that has fulfilled all of the three criteria is The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
