It looks like Nintendo continued to pursue the position of top-dog in the world of TV advertising, even as its biggest competitor inched ahead in 2020.
According to VentureBeat, Nintendo emerged the second most-viewed gaming brand on TV during for the period of 1 January 2020 – 15 December 2020. It barely lost out to Sony, which took first place with 4.22 billion TV ad impressions (across 31 ads) in the same period.
Meanwhile, here’s how Nintendo fared in comparison:
- Nintendo aired 65 spots 23,590 times in total, resulting in 4.17 billion TV ad impressions
- This was a 33.20% increase from 2019.
- the most-seen ad with 472.2 million impressions was “How We Play: Mario Kart 8” (seen below)

All in all, it looks like Nintendo had quite the year vying for consumers’ attention on the silver screen. With Sony’s PS5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S now making more headlines than before, it remains to be seen if Nintendo can continue to keep up this momentum.
