Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto Doesn’t Think They’ll Make A Smash Bros. Movie
Following the reveal that Fox McCloud from Star Fox would be in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, many fans were excited by the possibility that it could be leading up to a Super Smash Bros. Movie featuring all the characters from Nintendo’s film adaptations.
In an interview with Polygon, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto shot down the idea, saying that he doesn’t think that there will be “a situation where all Nintendo characters will be joining”. According to Miyamoto, the cast of Super Mario is more than enough to carry the films, and that any special characters are just there to “add a little spice”. He uses Pikmin as an example of characters that can appear in any Nintendo project.
Right off the bat, I’ll say that unlike something like Super Smash Bros., I don’t think you’ll have a situation [where] all Nintendo characters would be joining. As you know, my rule is that Pikmin can appear in any [Nintendo] series.
…
We have plenty of [Mario] characters to create a movie, and yet we wanted to add a little bit of spice, a little bit of secret cameos here and there. And you’ll see that there’s one secret character that plays a big role.
Illumination’s CEO Chris Meledandri also adds that they are really focusing on one movie at a time, rather than building up to a cinematic universe like other film franchises. Any special characters come about as more of incidental ideas, which they run by Miyamoto before putting them into the film.
Our process is actually very different from that. It’s much more geared toward conversations about what would be fun within a certain scene in the movie. So these ideas come up based on, “Oh, wouldn’t it be fun if the Pikmin appeared here? Wouldn’t that be fun?” And then that conversation, if we agree that it’s a fun idea, then we look to Miyamoto-san to just make his own judgment about whether or not it feels right to him…
