In an interview with Game Freak developers Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori, the duo were asked about replicating the open world experience of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in a core Pokemon RPG.
According to Masuda, the biggest question lies in what’s the best way of making the gameplay mechanics of Pokemon work in an open world concept. If Game Freak is able to find a way to balance both, it’s in the realm of possibility.
While Masuda understands that fans would love to play an open world Pokemon RPG, he personally feels an open world type of game is best suited to just “having a sword and going out and fighting enemies”.
Masuda also added he loves games similar to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, due to their “really strong setting” and how the gameplay matches it.
