Sony has announced a shocking change for how they will release games on Playstation coming in a few years.
In a recent blog post, Sony confirmed that they are planning to stop producing physical game discs for all games releasing on Playstation by January 2028. What this means is that Playstation owners will have no choice but to buy digital if they want to play games on the console. Sony claims that this is in response a “shift” of consumer interest and the broader entertainment industry “away from physical discs”.
As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.
This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.
Such a shift could have significant ripple effects across the games industry, and is a huge blow to collector’s of physical media. Whether or not other console providers such as Nintendo or XBox will follow suit remains to be seen.
