Pokemon Center Japan Announces “Pokemon Taruka” Playing Card Game

Following their take on Old Maid, The Pokemon Company has announced a new playing card game for Japan.

The new product is called “Pokemon Taruka” and is a take on the classic card game “Karuta” from Japan. The original game is played by spreading out a set of “grabbing” cards on the table or floor, with another set of “reading” cards held by a dealer. The dealer draws from the “reading” deck and reads it aloud, and the players must compete to find the matching card from the “grabbing” set laid out on the ground. Pokemon Taruka adds an additional twist to the format by having the “reading” cards written backwards, adding an extra challenge for the dealer and the player.

You can find some videos illustrating how “Taruka” is played below:

Pokemon Taruka sets will be sold at Pokemon Center stores in Japan from July 19th 2025.
