If you’re living in Singapore and have always wanted to work at Pokemon Center, your golden opportunity has finally arrived today.
The Pokemon Company’s official subsidiary, Pokemon Singapore Pte. Ltd., has put up job listings for the upcoming Pokemon Center Singapore. Pokemon Center Singapore is the world’s first Pokemon Center to be opened outside Japan. It will open to the public at Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport in March 2019.
Two positions are currently open to interested applicants – Cashier and Sales Associate. Below you can find information on requirements, responsibilities, salary, and benefits.
The requirements to work at Pokemon Center Singapore are very low. You’ll need at least a ‘Primary/Secondary School/”O” Level’ certification in any field. Those who plan to work as a cashier should be able to converse English and/or Mandarin (an additional language would be considered advantageous), while those eyeing to be a sales associate should be able to converse in English and if possible, at least one of the following languages: Mandarin, Bahasa Malay, Tamil.
You should be able to work one of the three shifts (9am – 6pm, 12pm – 9pm, 2pm – 11pm) as allocated by the manager, and be prepared to work on weekends. Full time employees are required to work at least 40 hours a week (about 8 hours a day on a 5 day work week), while part time employees will have to work at least 20 hours a week (8 hours a day on a 3 day work week). Applicants with at least a year of experience working at retail are preferred.
Applicants applying for the job should also have “good interpersonal skills” and be a team player. They should also have a “positive working attitude” and be “motivated and independent”.
Depending on the position you choose, you’ll need to fulfill different responsibilities at the store.
As a sales associate, you’ll be in charge of answering customer inquiries and assisting customers that need help. Sales associates are required to “maintain outstanding work place condition and visual merchandising of Pokemon Center standards” – in other words, sales associates have to ensure the place is clean, stock merchandise, arrange the layout of merchandise, and make sure everything is neat and tidy.
Cashiers working at Pokemon Center Singapore must be an ambassador for the Pokemon brand, complete customer transactions promptly, respond to customer inquiries, and perform basic housekeeping functions.
The starting salary for both positions is SGD1800 (USD1319) to SGD2200 (USD1612) a month. That is about half of the starting salary at a Pokemon Center location in Japan (USD2228 – USD3713). Keep in mind the Japanese have to pay higher taxes and contribute a large chunk of their salary to their national health insurance account.
Employees working at Pokemon Center locations in Japan are eligible to receive a bonus every summer and every winter, as well as annual salary increment. There is no word on said bonus and increment for Pokemon Center Singapore employees.
Benefits employees working at Pokemon Center Singapore receive include “medical, dental, and staff” benefits. Although not mentioned, Pokemon Center Singapore employees should also receive overtime pay and paid leave, but may not be eligible to claim transport expenses that their Japanese counterparts are entitled to.
If you think you have what it takes to work at Pokemon Center Singapore, you can submit your resume here (Sales Associate) or here (Cashier). At press time, both job listings have received over 100 applications, which opened on December 31, 2018. Applications close January 20, 2019.
