During Nintendo’s recent third quarter financial results briefing, the company revealed some updated sales figures for Pokemon Sword And Shield.
According to Nintendo’s latest data, Pokemon Sword And Shield have sold 16.06 Million units total worldwide as of December 31st 2019. Given that this was achieved within around one and a half months, this quite possibly makes them the fastest selling Pokemon titles in recent memory.
To put things in perspective, here are the lifetime sales of the first games in Pokemon’s last few generations:
(2002) Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire [GBA] – 16.22 million
(2006) Pokémon Diamond/Pearl [NDS] – 17.67 million
(2010) Pokémon Black/White [NDS] – 15.64 million
(2013) Pokémon X/Y [3DS] – 16.44 million
(2016) Pokémon Sun/Moon [3DS] – 16.18 million
(2019) Pokémon Sword/Shield [NSW] – 16.06 million
As you can see, Pokemon Sword/Shield have already surpassed the lifetime sales of Pokemon Black/White, and are quite close to overtaking Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire and Pokemon Sun/Moon. With the Expansion Pass on the horizon, its likely only a matter of time before the latter becomes a reality.
