Pokemon Sword/Shield Online Multiplayer Requires Nintendo Switch Online, Up To 4 Players Supported

Today, The Pokemon Company announced tons of details for the first mainline core Pokemon Switch games Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Over at the official Japanese website, it has been confirmed that all online multiplayer features such as battling and trading will require an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. In addition, it’s also been confirmed that both local and online multiplayer support 2 to 4 players.
