Earlier this week, The Pokemon Company started a limited time collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum, which was quickly swarmed with customers eager to get their hands on the exclusive merch and TCG card.
According to an announcement on Twitter, demand was so overwhelming that all of the collaboration merch is now sold out, including the stock prepared for the Pokemon Center online. The Pokemon Company has issued an apology to fans, and has stated that they are “working on ways to provide more “Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat” promo cards for fans shopping at Pokémon Center in the future”.
Unfortunately, this “overwhelming demand” seems primarily driven by Pokemon TCG card scalpers, who were eager to snatch up the exclusive promo card to flip online for cash. Some reports claim that scalpers were using scripts to buy up the merch available on the Pokemon Center online store, which were all promised to come with the promo card. This situation serves as another example of how the lucrative aftermarket for Pokemon TCG cards can negatively affect regular Pokemon fans’ enjoyment of promotional events and collaborations.
