Entomologists have named a newly discovered species of cockroach after a Pokemon.
The new species was discovered in Singapore, and given the name Nocticola Pheromosa, after the fearsome Ultra Beast from Pokemon Sun and Moon. It is the first cockroach of this genus to be discovered in the region, having never been formally documented until now.
Entomologist Foo Maosheng, who co-authored the finding, said the name was chosen because he and his co-author were Pokemon fans, and because the newly discovered cockroach bears similarity to the cockroach based Pheromosa:
“Both my collaborator and I are also Pokemon fans, so we thought why not name the cockroach after a Pokemon inspired by a cockroach.”
“There are some similarities between Pheromosa and the delicate cockroach that we found, such as having a long antenna, wings that mimic a hood and long slender legs.”
This is not the first time that newly discovered real-life creatures have been named after Pokemon. Other notable examples include three Australian beetles named after the Kanto Legendary Birds, the extinct winged reptile named after Aerodactyl, and others.
