Reggie Talks About Nintendo’s Holiday Strategy: 3DS, Switch, Super Smash Bros & Pokemon

Despite a dry year, Nintendo will still be charging full-steam ahead for the end of 2018.

In a recent Kotaku interview, Nintendo of America’s president Reggie Fils-Aime spoke at length about the company’s battle plans for the holiday season. With a new Smash game incoming and the 3DS doing surprisingly well, Reggie was fairly confident that Nintendo would achieve its projected goals.

Here are some highlights from the interview:

3DS

  • 3DS has had growth year-on-year for the first three-quarters of the year in the Americas
  • Reggie certainly hopes the 3DS has many more years ahead of it

Switch

  • Reggie says October, November, and December are critical to Nintendo hitting 20 million Switch units sold this fiscal year.
  • For the first 12 months of availability, Nintendo Switch was the best-selling system of all time in the US, and the goal is to continue that trend.
  • Nintendo wants to be in a position coming out of the holidays where they can be proud of their results compared to the Wii.
  • Reggie says third-party support on Switch has been quite strong.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

  • The hardware bundle for Smash Bros Ultimate is “effectively sold out”
  • Reggie says Sakurai will continue to tweak the different characters until launch and even past launch
  • Reggie would have loved for Smash Bros. Ultimate to come out earlier in the year, as December is a challenging month.

Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee

  • Nintendo believes they’ve planned well for bundle stock with Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee
