Rhythm Heaven Groove is a superb sequel that expertly capitalizes on the captivating energy of its excellent music across a series of joyfully animated minigames. The solo campaign is well-balanced and stuffed with genre-shifting earworms you won’t forget fast. The new Beatspell RPG mode and more straightforward Toybox levels don’t quite reach that same impressive bar, but the co-op mode does stand as a great addition with a solid range of competitive and collaborative games that quickly got me and my friends laughing. Even so, this irreverent return to Rhythm Heaven hits all the right notes, solidifying itself as an unmissable addition to the series.

Game Informer ~ 83

Rhythm Heaven Groove is not my favorite in the franchise, but it makes me just as happy, proud, anxious, and angry as all the previous games in the series.

Nintendo Life ~ 80

Tomodachi Life was a late-cycle winner, but if Rhythm Heaven Groove is to be its swansong, Switch 1 is going out on a high note. Beatspell didn’t hit for me, personally, and the lag issues thrown up by playing on a modern TV are irritating, so be aware that you’ll need to play in handheld or tabletop mode to get the best out of it…You shouldn’t let that dissuade you from experiencing one of gaming’s most infectiously fun-filled series, though. I was worried that we’d make it through the Switch generation without a Rhythm Heaven, but coming just over a decade after the last, Nintendo has snuck out one final hit for the old Switch. A surprise and a delight, indeed.

Siliconera ~ 80

Rhythm Heaven Groove follows the franchise formula very closely, building a familiar but robust toy box for fans of the beat. Lag is the number one concern! We recommend playing in handheld mode, and choosing headphones carefully if necessary. Still, it’s worth the care.

Eurogamer ~ 80

This game gets me inside the music. It makes me pay attention. It makes me try to understand what’s actually going on.

Gamespot ~ 80

Nintendo is one of the biggest and oldest game publishers in the world, so it feels strange to say that something it made carries itself with indie sensibilities. But that’s always been true of WarioWare, and by extension, it’s true of Rhythm Heaven Groove. It’s such a strange, low-fi game that it comes off as if the team is getting away with something while the boss isn’t looking. But it’s also a genuinely welcome addition to my Switch collection, because it’s such an oddity. Whenever I feel the need to tap my toes while feeling the beat of a tadpole march, or invite my friends to compete in a foot race as lucha libre across giant bouncy balls, I’ll return to Rhythm Heaven.
