Ever since the release of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, fans have been speculating about whether it may one day lead to a Super Smash Bros. crossover film starring numerous Nintendo characters with their own movie adaptations, similar to what Marvel did with its iconic Avengers movie.
Recently, a post from a reportedly reputable film leaker DanielkRpk surfaced on the ResetEra forums. According to the insider, Illumination is in the process of pitching just such a film to Nintendo. It is described specifically as a “shared cinematic universe” with “multiple spin-off films”, culminating in the Super Smash Bros. movie as “their Avengers”. The leaker does not mention whether Nintendo rejected or approved this proposal.
Regardless of the truth of this claim, a Super Smash Bros. crossover film seems a bit unlikely at this point in time. Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. movie series is still just getting started, and the official Legend Of Zelda movie is not only being worked on by a different studio, but is also planned to be live-action. This seems to suggest that Nintendo isn’t planning on building a shared universe of Nintendo films at the moment, although plans could always change in the future.
