Rumor: Leaker Claimed That A New 2D Metroid Is Releasing In 2025

In 2021, Nintendo released Metroid Dread,  a return to the franchise’s 2D roots that went on to become the best-selling Metroid game of all time.

4 years on, many of fans of the classic formula might be itching for a new 2D Metroid. Over on the r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit, attention was called to a 2023 post from a leaker going by Nash Weedle, who was credited with leaking the existence of Metroid Dread before it was officially announced. Nash Weedle claimed that another 2D Metroid by the same development team (Mercury Steam) was in the works, planned to release in 2025.

That said, this claim now seems somewhat dubious, as we now know that Metroid Prime 4 is set to launch sometime this year for the Switch. It seems unlikely that Nintendo would launch two different Metroid titles in the same year. Some have pointed out that Nintendo previously did something similar by releasing Metroid Prime 1 and Metroid Fusion in the same year, but those games were released on different consoles.

Given that Nintendo now has a tendency to sit on completed projects for release later, some speculate that Nintendo will probably delay the release of this unannounced 2D Metroid title to avoid clashing with Metroid Prime 4, meaning that it may release in 2026 or beyond instead of 2025 like Nash Weedle claimed.

That said, as with all reports of this nature, we caution readers to take this with a grain of salt. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
